Jody Victor: OSU Alumni Jack Nicklaus farewell

Thank You Sir!

OhioState alumni can be proud of Jack Nicklaus for his contributions to the game of golf.  Jack ended his career at the golf course where golf began.  St. Andrews the host to THE OPEN bid farewell to Jack on Friday July 15, 2005

Kathy Victor and I watched along with Steve Victor and Joe Victor as the greatest player of all time crossed the bridge to the green on 18.  How would Jack finish?  Would he embarrass himself?  Not at all as Jack sunk a birdie putt on the final hole of his legendary career.

This is a special place to Jack.  Bobby Jones, Jack’s golf mentor told him that he would never be considered a complete player if he did not win at St. Andrews.  Jack has won THE OPEN at St. Andrews twice.

There he was standing over a putt with 10 mph winds, a plane humming over head, people leaning out of windows and crowded on balconies as 65 year old Jack Nicklaus stroked the ball and in it went for a birdie.  The crowd roared.  Kathy and I (Jody Victor) fought back tears as we watched Jack embrace his son who was his caddy, Tom Watson was next for a hug and out came his wife and the rest of the family.  Jack wiped away tears.  His job was done.  What he has added to the game no one has done.  Count them 18 Major Championships!!

This was a Friday.  Tiger Woods at age 29 came into the club house later with the lead.  The torch has been passed.  Jack and Tiger met each other in the interview room.  “Nice playing,” Jack told him, extending his right hand.  “Thank you sir,” Tiger replied as they shook.

Thank you Jack for being the Bear and making it better for Tiger and those who will follow.

Go Bucks!
