Jody Victor: OSU Football welcomes Akron Local Butch Reynolds to Staff

Jody Victor: Even though summer is here that doesn’t stop the Ohio State Football team from continuing to prepare for the upcoming season. FormerOhioState track star Butch Reynolds, who in 1988 set the world record in the 400-meter dash and then went on to compete in three Olympic Games, is returning to his alma mater as a member of Jim Tressel's football staff. Reynolds will be part of the Buckeyes' strength and conditioning staff and will specialize in speed training and nutrition.

“We feel very fortunate to have one of the finest athletes in the history of OhioState back at his alma mater,” said Tressel. “More and more in college football, speed is the element that separates the good teams from the great teams. We have good speed on this team. I believe Butch can help us become a team with great speed. His knowledge and expertise will benefit all of our players.

“One of the things that impressed me most during his interview was his passion for OhioState. He really wants to be here.”

Reynolds, who presently lives in his hometown of Akron where he works as a personal trainer, will start his new job June 13.

“I am excited to be working with Coach Tressel and the OhioState football team,” said Reynolds. “The chance to return to Columbus and again be part of the university was an easy choice for me.

“My goal will be to enhance the speed, agility, mobility and endurance of each and every player through a combination of speed training, aerobics and nutrition. I can't wait to get started. Just the thought of running out of the tunnel the first time has me really excited.”

Reynolds set the world record in the 400-yard dash in 1988 with a time of 0:43.29. He competed in the 1988, '92 and '96 Olympics, winning a gold medal in the 1,600 relay and a silver medal in the 400-meter dash in 1988.

Reynolds received his degree from
OhioState in 1991. From 1996 to 1998 he was an assistant track coach for the Buckeyes. He was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

It’s great to see an Akron-local helping out at OhioState. I personally have had the opportunity to spend some time with Butch Reynolds and I know that he will be an asset to the OSU football team.

We look forward to another great season!

Go Bucks!
