Jody Victor: Ohio State's one football practice Saturday was a mid-afternoon kick scrimmage in Ohio Stadium. The Gray team prevailed over the Scarlet 33-30. Here's some of the details straight from Football News at osu.edu.
“While the punt and kickoff special units – coverage and return games – were also a big part of the day, all eyes were focused on the place kicking competition between senior Devin Barclay, a 27-year-old fifth-year senior from Annapolis, Md., and true freshman Drew Basil, from Chilicothe, Ohio. The two are competing – and have been since spring drills as Basil enrolled at Ohio State for the 2010 spring quarter – for the kickoff and place kicking assignments that were shared last year by Aaron Pettrey, now in NFL preseason camp with the Detroit Lions, and Barclay.
Both kickers were on their game Saturday as the two combined to convert – unofficially as there were no official statistics kept – 21 of 23 field goal attempts including an impressive 9-for-10 showing from 40 yards and beyond.
Barclay: 10-for-11 Barclay, who hit 7 0f 10 field goals for the Buckeyes last year including an overtime game winner from 39 yards vs. Iowa and three more in the Rose Bowl, made 10 of 11 kicks with his only miss from 37 yards after a Gray timeout that would have tied the score at 33-apiece. He made all four of his 40-plus attempts: three 42-yarders and one from 44 yards.
Basil: 11-for-12 Basil, who hit five from beyond 40 yards with a long of 47 (twice), made good on 11 of his 12 attempts with his only miss a middle-of-the-competition miss from 45 yards that hit the right upright.
No. 9 for Jake Long snapper Jake McQuaide participated in his ninth kick scrimmage Saturday. The senior, who will be handling all special teams snaps for a third year, knows a thing or two about flying objects: he is an aeronautical engineering major from Cincinnati.
Nice Day, Derek Derek Erwin, a third-year sophomore from Tiro, Ohio, had a nice day handling placements for Drew Basil. He had to reach high for one high snap, but he secured it and made the placement a heartbeat ahead of Basil's powerful right leg. The kick was good from 45 yards. While Erwin handled placements for Basil, No. 2 quarterback Joe Bauserman held for Barclay. Dane Sanzenbacker, another of the team's holders, had the day off.
Roar Inducers Big plays on the field that elicited nice roars of approval were made by: senior Taurian Washington, who caught about an 80-yard bomb from Terrelle Pryor prior to the kick scrimmage; sophomore FB Zach Boren, who had about a 50-yard run at one point during one play; hard hits by freshman DB Christian Bryant and freshman RB Carlos Hyde; and about a 46-yard punt return by freshman Corey Brown.
The Coaches The winning Gray team was coached by third-year cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson. The Scarlet team was coached by offensive graduate assistant Wes Satterfield. In his first season with the Buckeyes, Satterfield was a four-year starter at quarterback, kicker and punter for Sewanee: The University of the South. He is from Hartsville, Tenn.”
