COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ryan Riga, a junior left-hander on the Ohio State baseball team, has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. The award is the second Pitcher of the Week honor for Riga after garnering the laurel Feb. 18.
Riga was brilliant in a complete-game shutout of No. 9 Oregon Saturday, striking out a career-high 10 while walking one and scattering five hits to improve to 2-0 on the season. The complete game shutout by Riga was the first by a Buckeye in exactly one year. Jaron Long tossed a three-hit shutout in an 11-0 win over Harvard March 8 of last season in Myrtle Beach, N.C. Riga’s 10-strikeout game was the first double-digit strikeout game since Brad Goldberg struck out 10 in 6.1 hitless innings in a win over Mount St. Mary’s Feb. 23, 2013.
The Buckeyes face No. 7 Oregon State at 8:35 p.m. ET Tuesday in Corvallis.
