Ohio State Hosts Ohio, Toledo in Midweek Contests

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team hosts Ohio Tuesday and Akron Wednesday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. Both games are set for 6:35 p.m.

Ohio State was swept by Indiana in a three-game series over the weekend. The Buckeyes lost the opener, 6-4, Friday before dropping a Sunday doubleheader by an 8-2 and a 7-1 count.

Ryan Leffel went 4-for-7 with a run scored in the series while Josh Dezse went 4-for-10 with a double and four RBI.

Offensively, Ohio State ranks near the top of the Big Ten in runs scored (3rd, 127), doubles (t-3rd, 40) and triples (t-2nd, 9) . On the mound, the Buckeyes rank in saves (t-1st, 8).

Individually, multiple Buckeyes rank in the Top 10 in Big Ten offensive categories. Ronnie Dawson sits eighth with a .346 average while Troy Kuhn is tied for first with four home runs, eighth with a .485 slugging percentage, tied for sixth with 19 RBI, tied for third with eight doubles and tied for second in the Big Ten after getting hit eight times.

Ryan Riga ranks third in the conference with 46.0 innings pitched and tied for fifth with 31 strikeouts while Tanner Tully is fifth with a 2.06 ERA. Trace Dempsey is tied for third with four saves.

Ohio State Welcomes Toledo for Home Finale on Columbus City Schools Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team hosts Toledo in its home finale on Columbus City Schools Day at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Buckeyes took two of three games over the weekend against Seattle. Ohio State won the opener, 4-1, and finale, 7-2, while dropping the middle game, 11-1. Jaron Long allowed one earned run over 7.0 innings to pick up the win Friday while John Kuchno gave up two earned runs over a career-high 7.0 innings to earn his team-high eighth win Sunday. Brad Hallberg went 5-for-10 with a double, a triple and three runs scored against the Redhawks.

Toledo, under the direction of ninth-year head coach Cory Mee, enters the week with a 27-24 overall record, 16-8 in Mid-American Conference play. Wes White leads the team with a .371 batting average while Joe Corfman is batting .335 with 13 doubles, a triple, three home runs and a team-high 49 runs scored.

Ohio State holds a 26-6 lead in the all-time series including a 13-1 win March 10 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Buckeyes enter the week with a 30-22 overall record. Ohio State currently sits sixth in the Big Ten Conference with an 11-10 ledger, a game up on Minnesota and two games up on Illinois for the last Big Ten tournament spot heading into the final weekend. The Buckeyes rank fourth in on-base percentage (.372), tied for fifth in runs scored (287) and sixth in batting average (.268). Ohio State leads the Big Ten with 249 walks and 80 stolen bases.

Individually, Josh Dezse sits eighth with a .434 on-base percentage while Brad Hallberg is tied for fifth with 14 doubles. Tim Wetzel is tied for tops in the Big Ten with 38 walks while Ryan Cypret sits fourth with 35. Kirby Pellant sits second with 28 stolen bases and Joe Ciamacco is tied for eighth with 14.

On the mound, Jaron Long ranks in several categories, including ERA (1.85, 2nd), innings pitched (92.1, t-2nd) and wins (6, t-9th) while John Kuchno is tied for first with eight wins and Josh Dezse is tied for second with seven saves. Andrew Armstrong leads the Big Ten with 29 appearances and David Fathalikhani is second with 27.

In addition, the Buckeyes rank seventh nationally in walks and Long sits 15th in walks per nine innings at 1.06.
